US freezes Lebanon aid over arms embargo breaches

The US Congress has halted an expected financial aid transfer to Lebanon over that nation's failure to call for and allow international forces to deploy along its border with Syria in order to deny Hizb'allah additional arms shipments.

The UN resolution that ended this summer's Lebanon war called for a full arms embargo on Hizb'allah, to be implemented by both UN peacekeepers and the Lebanese army.

The UN said, however, that it would not deploy along the Lebanon-Syria border unless asked to do so by Beirut.
