Olmert sinks, 'Bibi' leaps ahead

Israelis who supported and voted into power the Kadima Party of Prime Minister Ehud Olmert just six months ago are now abandoning that ship, and its captain, in droves.

New opinion polls, the results of which were published Thursday, reveal that Olmert's popularity has come crashing down.

One survey has him holding the confidence of a mere seven percent of the Israeli public; another gves him a 22 percent approval rating, less than half the 48 percent he enjoyed six weeks ago.

And according to this second survey, if elections were held today, Kadima would drop from 29 seats to just 16.

By contrast, Likud Party leader and former prime minister Binyamin (Bibi) Netanyahu was given a nearly 30 percent approval rating in the poll which gave Olmert seven percent, and a 58 percent approval rating in the poll which gave Olmert 22 percent.

The Likud would sweep 24 seats in an election held today and another right wing party, Yisrael Beiteinu, would win 18 - meaning a right wing government would rule Israel.

The most popular duo to lead Israel were elections held today would be Netanyahu and former IDF Chief of Staff Moshe Ya'alon.
