Hamas says coup plot will lead to civil war

Hamas officials warned Saturday that PLO chief Mahmoud Abbas' apparent plotting to overthrow the current Palestinian Authority government would lead to a bloody civil war.

They said recent riots by Fatah-allied PA policemen were evidence of Abbas' decision to stage a coup.

Following Hamas' electoral victory earlier this year, Abbas repeatedly refused to demand the group soften its positions vis-a-vis Israel for fear of sparking internal violence.
