State comptroller assigns team to probe handling of Lebanon war

Israel's state comptroller has assigned a team of 50 officials to conduct an independent investigation into the government's handling of the summer's Lebanon war.
The comptroller is expected to submit an interim report on the matter to the Knesset Control Committee this month.
Opposition parties hope to use the findings in that report to force the establishment of a full state commission of inquiry into the performance of Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, Defense Minister Amir Peretz and IDF Chief of Staff Dan Halutz during the conflict with Hizb'allah.
Most Israelis are angered over their leaders' failure to deliver a promised victory over Hizb'allah, or to win the release two soldiers being held by the terror group.
