High Court orders Olmert to explain himself over war probe

Israel's Supreme Court Thursday ordered Prime Minister Ehud Olmert to explain why he did not establish a full independent state commission of inquiry into the handling of the recent war with Hizb'allah.
Instead, Olmert hand-picked a panel to conduct an investigation under the auspices of his office.
The High Court noted that such a panel was unlikely to too closely investigate any possible negligence or wrongdoing on the part of the prime minister, nor would it have the authority to recommend the dismissal of public officials.
A majority of Israelis want Olmert to step down after he failed to deliver a promised victory over Hizb'allah.
IDF reservists returning from the battlefield revealed that victory eluded them because of government indecision that forced them to halt an untold number of missions aimed at crushing the enemy.
