Israel on alert for Syrian attack

Israel is on heightened alert for a possible Syrian assault on the Golan Heights, say defense officials and local Golan residents.
While Israel has not moved any additional tanks or troops to the Golan for fear of escalating the situation, key border positions have been fortified.
The move comes after Syrian dictator Bashar Assad said, once again, that his nation is preparing for the possibility of war with Israel.
Assad justifies doing so by claiming that Israel is preparing an unprovoked attack on Syria.
Analysts says that Assad was encouraged by Hizb'allah's performance against the IDF this summer, and hopes that even in defeat Damascus could force a diplomatic process on Israel that would lead to the surrender of the Golan.
As an example, Syria looks to Egypt's diplomatic successes in the Sinai following its 1973 defeat to Israel in the Yom Kippur War.
