Abdullah looks to strengthen hold on Temple Mount

Source: Associated Press
October 10, 2006

Jordan's King Abdullah II is looking to strengthen Islam's hold over Jerusalem's Temple Mount by adding a fifth minaret to the site.

In a palace statement released Monday, Abdullah announced the start of an architectural competition to produce the plans for the new minaret.

Home to the Temple of the God of Israel for some 1,000 years, the Temple Mount has been occupied since 691 AD by Islam's Al Aqsa Mosque and Dome of the Rock.

Despite being the holiest site in the world to Jews and many Christians, non-Muslims are not permitted to pray or carry Bibles atop the Temple Mount.
