Hamas mulls targeting Americans

Hamas field commanders are pushing the group's leadership to authorize a campaign of terror against American targets in the Middle East.

They say the violence would come in response to US efforts to topple the Hamas-led Palestinian Authority government by financially backing Mahmoud Abbas' Fatah faction.

Washington was embarrassed in January of this year when, after pushing for full democratic elections in the Palestinian Authority, Hamas scored an overwhelming victory and took over the reins of power.

The Bush administration recognizes Hamas as a terrorist organization dedicated to Israel's destruction, but claims that Abbas' Fatah is a "moderate" movement and a true partner for peace.

US officials continue to ignore statements by Fatah officials indicating their faction is equally dedicated to Israel's demise, albeit via a different approach.
