IDF: Syrian army in battle positions

Source: Ynetnews
October 16, 2006

A top IDF intelligence officer told Israel's cabinet Sunday that Syrian artillery and missiles remain deployed in forward battle positions.

Syrian forces went on high alert and prepared for possible confrontation during the summer's Israel-Hizb'allah war. They have not been taken off that war footing since, warned Brig.-Gen. Yossi Baidatz.

Syrian dictator Bashar Assad claims that Israel is preparing to attack his country, and that he is preparing for that assault.

Israel, however, is not deployed for open conflict with Syria, and many suspect Assad may be looking to provoke a low-key Israeli strike on Syria justifying an artillery and missile response on the Jewish state.

Such a sequence of events could quickly lead to full-scale war, which, even if Syria lost, would result in an international diplomatic process regarding control of the Golan Heights.

Israel has in the past launched limited air strikes on terrorist bases inside Syria in response to attacks within the borders of the Jewish state.

Damascus continues to openly support Hizb'allah, Hamas, Islamic Jihad and other groups dedicated to Israel's destruction.
