Italy aids Lebanon against Israel

Reports out of Rome revealed Wednesday that the pro-Arab regime of Italian Prime Minister Romana Prodi has chosen to actively support Lebanon against Israel.

In order to ensure that Israeli aircraft do not overfly Lebanese territory to monitor Hizb?allah activity should hostilities resume between the two sides, Prodi has given instructions for his Italian Ministry of Defense to push through the sale of the advanced surface-to-air Aster 15 missile system.

DEBKAfile, which scooped this story, described the Aster 15 as ?the only Western surface-to-air missile with an active guidance system capable of last-minute corrections of targeting at the moment of interception.?

It is designed to shoot down helicopters, warplanes and drones.

French president Jaques Chirac, whose country co-developed the Aster 15 with Italy, has approved to the sale.

Chirac, who presides over one of the most antisemitic populations in Europe, has had a long-standing love affair with the Arabs.

He oversaw the sale of the Osiris (god of the dead) nuclear reactor to Iraqi president Saddam Hussein, and exploded with fury when the Israeli Air Force successfully crippled it in 1981 to prevent Saddam from developing a nuclear bomb.

On top of thise, citing Israeli Defense Minister Amir Peretz?s briefing to a Knesset panel on October 16, DEBKAfile reports that ?commanders of the French UNIFIL contingent have threatened to fire on Israeli warplanes in Lebanese skies.?

Meanwhile, Italian instructors are expected to accompany the Aster 15 missile battery to Lebanon, there to train the Lebanese in how to use it against Israeli aircraft.

Says DEBKAfile: ?Since 50% of those officers are Shiites loyal to Hizb?allah or Amal, the Shiite terrorists are looking forward to gaining access for the first time to top-of-the-line Western anti-air missile technology.?

Apparently ever the appeasers, Israel?s government has not yet lodged a formal protest with the Italian government.

Jerusalem has also not officially complained about ongoing illegal Hizb?allah movements and arms-smuggling.
