Israel poised to lose best, only friend at the UN

John Bolton, one of Israel's staunchest defenders in the hostile and largely antisemitic United Nations has resigned as US Ambassador to the UN.

Bolton, who has long been opposed in his position by US Democrats, will leave his post when the term of his appointment runs out in a few weeks.

During his tenure since August 2005, Bolton has stood rock solid in support of Israel, often going it alone against an overwhelmingly hostile Security Council and a rabidly anti-Israel General Assembly.

Observers believe the failure of the Bush administration to ensure Bolton remains on at the UN signals a trend away from standing with Israel that is expected to result from the recent mid-term elections.
