Olmert: Open fire but honor ceasefire

By Stan Goodenough
December 27, 2006

Prime Minister Ehud Olmert Wednesday ordered the IDF to carry out pin-point attacks against Gaza Arabs firing missiles against Israelis.

The command came a day after seven Kassam rockets were fired by “Palestinians” intent on killing, maiming or simply terrorizing Jews in the south of the country.

Two Israeli boys were injured, one critically, when a rocket slammed into the ground in Sderot Tuesday evening, a town that has been hit by missiles on an almost daily basis for months on end.

But even as the Israeli leader, under increasing pressure from his defense officials, finally ordered an end to the policy of “restraint” shown in the face of some 60 attacks, he tempered the instruction by saying that Israel would continue to honor the “ceasefire.”

His government would also, said Olmert, demand that the Hamas-led Palestinian Authority take immediate steps to halt the rocket attacks.

While the inference was that Israel would deal more stringently with the issue should the PA refuse to do so, Olmert-watchers increasingly agree that the prime minister is too weak-willed to make the decisions necessary to secure his own people.
