IDF: Prospects for regional conflict higher in 2007

Last year may have seen a war fought between Israel and the Hizb'allah, but an even greater likelihood of conflict faces Israel in 2007, a high-ranking IDF officer said Wednesday.
The military's assessment for the coming 12 months sees another Israel-Hiz'allah clash and, even more seriously, a war between Israel and Syria.
Syria's aresenal includes long-range SCUD missiles tipped with VX gas, an agent capable of inflicting tens of thousands of casualties on Israel.
While the threat is indeed a serious one, the officer lamented the fact that the defense budget for the year ahead was NIS 8 billion ($1.9 billion) short of what is required to prepare the IDF for war.
