Peace Now seeks to sour Olmert-Rice meeting

By
January 15, 2007

The ultra-leftist Peace Now organization sought to pit visiting US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice against Prime Minister Ehud Olmert Monday.

Just as Rice and Olmert were going into a meeting, Peace Now went to the press to point out that Olmert's Housing Ministry had just issued a tender for the construction of more homes in Ma'ale Adumim.

The Judean city is situated in territory the world wants to use for a Palestinian state.

US policy on what are termed "Jewish settlements" is that they comprise the main obstacle to peace between Israel and the Arabs.

Israel's position is that it is Arab hatred of the Jews and their readiness to employ terrorism against Israel that is the primary obstacle to peace.

Peace Now has made a tactic out of using US pressure on Israeli governments to get those governments to comply with leftist demands and expectations.

Nothing would have pleased the organization more Monday than to hear Rice reprimand her Israeli host for the alleged expansion of a Jewish city in the biblical heartland of Israel.

Maybe the news did not reach her on time, but there were no reports of her slapping Olmert on the wrist - this time.
