‘Olmert resign’ – most Israelis want him gone

By Stan Goodenough

Less than a year after electing him to the premiership, the vast majority of Israelis want Ehud Olmert to “go home.”

Some are have lost faith in their prime minister following repeated allegations of corruption; some believe he should take responsibility for Israel’s failed war against Hizb’allah last summer.

Israel’s Channel 10 TV Wednesday broadcast the results of a public opinion poll showing that 69 percent of voters believe Olmert should follow the example of IDF Chief of Staff Dan Halutz and resign.

A whopping 85 percent want Defense Minister Amir Peretz to do the same.

Halutz handed in his letter earlier this week, sending Israelis into spasms of speculation on whether the clock was also ticking for Olmert and Peretz.

But both men have vowed they will not fall “victim” to a domino affect.

A source close to the prime minister said that his fate was in the hands of the Olmert-appointed Winograd Commmission into the prosecution of the war in southern Lebanon.

Winograd is expected to publish its findings at the end of February.
