US pressure dashes hopes of new homes for refugees

They have been waiting for more than 18 months for housing promised them after their own government dragged them out of their homes in the beautifully-developed and established Gaza Strip communities and dumped them in caravans and tent cities.
A site in the Jordan Valley had been earmarked for the construction of their new homes which was expected to get underway in the next few weeks.
The United States, which had strongly supported the uprooting that made refugees out of Gaza's Jews, disapproved of the plans because the Jordan Valley is part of the land America and the rest of the world want to see given to the Palestinian Arabs.
Washington pressured the Olmert government and, on Friday morning, Defense Minister Amir Peretz informed the waiting Jews that they would no longer be given homes in Maskiot.
US Ambassador Richard Jones told The Jerusalem Post this week the Bush administration viewed Maskiot as a "new settlement," construction of which is in breach of Israel's agreements under the "Road Map."
