Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert is, according to the country's popular press, preparing to use his office to try ensure that Shimon Peres becomes president.
Politicians will vote for a new president after the incumbent, Moshe Katsav, requested temporary leave of absence while the attorney-general decides whether or not to try him on rape and other charges.
Katsav beat Peres in the last race, and supporters of the man known as Israel's elder statesman now see a chance for him to run again, and win.
To boost Peres' chances, Olmert has said he will strongly back amending the votering procedure from secret to a public ballot.
Opposition lawmakers have slammed the premier, saying he is abusing his office for personal reasons.
