Israel urges against acceptance of new Palestinian government

As the international community responds with guarded optimism to last week's power-sharing agreement between Hamas and Mahmoud Abbas' Fatah, Israel is urging its allies to continue to hold the Palestinians to their commitments.
The Palestinian unity government deal does not require Hamas to explicitly recognize Israel's right to exist or renounce the use of terrorist violence against Jews.
That, Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni told European Union officials at the weekend, is a clear violation of the conditions the international community insisted upon if it were to lift economic sanctions against the Palestinian Authority.
Israeli officials cautioned that for the international community to accept the new Palestinian government despite its spurning of the underlying principles for peace would invite further Palestinian violations.
