No surprise: France to champion Hamas-led government

By
February 26, 2007

In an announcement that was sure to surprise very few, French Foreign Minister Philippe Douste-Blazy said on Saturday that his government is ready to work with a "Palestinian" unity government that includes a violently anti-Israel Hamas.

Said Douste-Blazy after meeting with PLO chief Mahmoud Abbas in Paris:

"I encouraged Mr. Abbas to persevere in his efforts to quickly form a national untiy government."

And after that government is formed, and apparently regardless of whether or not Hamas has complied with international demands to recognize Israel's right to exist, Douste-Blazy continued by stating:

"France will be ready to cooperate with it, and our country will plead on its behalf within the European Union and with other partners in the international community."

While Douste-Blazy made no firm commitments on renewing French financial aid to the Palestinian Authority, his comments flew in the face of internationally-backed demands that Hamas accept Israel as the Jewish state, renounce terrorism, and agree to make peace with Israel.

The Frenchman's position signals a further eroding of support for those demands that started with Russia's acceptance of Hamas, and new evidence that the world will ultimately embrace the terrorist PA regime and compel Israel to do the same.
