EU: Syria central player; we must re-engage

Source: Ha'aretz
March 10, 2007

All Damascus had to do following the major part Syrian officials played in the assassination of Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri, was lie low and wait for the diplomatic storm to pass.

Now the regime of Bashar al-Assad is preparing to welcome European Union foreign policy chief Xavier Solana, who will pay a previously unannounced visit to Syria this week.

The visit will take place despite the fact that Assad is suspected of abetting many of the insurgents responsible for the ongoing chaos and terrorism that is undermining western efforts to establish democracy in Iraq.

Syria is also known to pro-actively encourage terrorism against Israel and so make a major contribution to Middle East instability.

Terrorist leaders are given shelter in and permitted to direct the operations of their organizations from inside Damascus.

Assad also openly supports, arms and encourages the Lebanese Hizb’allah in its warfare against the Jewish state.

Nonetheless, Irish Foreign Minister Dermot Avern said the UE had mandated Solana to visit Syria because Europe increasingly recognized the need to re-engage Damascus due to Syria’s central and very influential place in the region.
