Israel's foreign ministry: We don't threaten Europe

Source: The Jerusalem Post
March 12, 2007

Instead of standing up to European states who want to waive their own conditions and give the Hamas-led Palestinian Authority an easy ride, Israel's foreign ministry Sunday swore it would never threaten Europe, despite how its often anti-Semitic leadership behaved.

The denial of a threat came after Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni warned EU foreign ministers last week that Israel would not be able to continue negotiating with "moderates" among the Palestinian Arabs if the west stopped insisting that these Arabs halt violence and recognize the Jewish state.

EU foreign policy czar Javier Solana messaged Livni that she could go fly a kite and, hours after her appeal, announced his intention to call on Syria's terrorist-supporting despot Bashar el-Assad.

While it is not clear from reports who accused Israel of telling Europe to tow the line "or else," Israeli government officials were swift to deny any suggestion of such undiplomatic behavior.

Their comments turned Livni's warning into a damp squib.

"We don't threaten Europe," one said, according to The Jerusalem Post Monday. "Livni just explained logically what the policy [of European backing down on its demands from Hamas] would be."
