'Fortress Gaza' is a reality

The Hamas-led Palestinian Arabs have succeeded in transforming the Gaza Strip into a heavily-fortified terrorist haven.

When Israel agreed to withdraw from Gaza in 2005, it received no shortage of assurances from the "Palestinians" and the international community that Gaza would not become the next Afghanistan or southern Lebanon.

But after more than 18 months of nearly unchecked arms smuggling and training in Iran and Syria, Gaza-based terrorists are heavily armed, well trained and deeply entrenched.

If Israel decides to launch an anti-terror incursion into Gaza in the near future, the IDF will be faced with a network of fortified bunkers and fresh minefields.

It will also be battling thousands of Hamas guerrillas trained to use advanced anti-tank missiles by their brothers in Hizb'allah.

Also in line with the relatively successful Hizb'allah tactics employed against Israel last summer, a future incursion of Gaza is expected to be accompanied by a massive missile barrage on southern Israel.

For the past year, defense officials have been warning that a major military operation in Gaza is needed immediately to reverse the dangerous situation.

Israel's current leadership, however, has chosen to ignore the warnings, insisting that the terrorist build-up in Gaza does not pose a strategic threat to the Jewish state.
