EU backs Syria's quest to regain Golan Heights

European foreign policy chief Javier Solana told his Syrian hosts on Wednesday that the European Union supports their goal of retaking the Golan Heights from Israel.

Solana did not address that fact that prior to Israel's liberation of the ancient Jewish territory, Syria used the Golan as a base from which to launch constant attacks on Israelis in the valleys below, not to mention two full-scale invasions.

At one point, Syria even tried to divert the water sources located on the Golan, which feed the Jordan River and Sea of Galilee - two of Israel's primary water sources.
