Olmert quibbles over fighting terror

Israel's defense experts all agree that a major anti-terror operation in Gaza is absolutely necessary, and the IDF has fully prepared itself for such an incursion.

But having failed to lead the nation to victory against Lebanon's Hizb'allah, Prime Minister Ehud Olmert was found making excuses on Saturday over why the time is just not right to militarily defend the people of Israel.

In an interview with Israel's Channel 2 News, Olmert was asked his view of defense assessments that military action is needed to halt the massive terrorist arms buildup in Gaza.

He replied:

The question is if it has to be a military operation, if it has to be a military operation by us and if it has to be now.

We won't shy away from a military operation if we reach the conclusion, after a thorough check, that it is possible, based on logic and level-headedness and no exaggerations, that there is no better way than this.

Completely contradicting all of the nation's top generals and defense experts, Olmert insisted that at present there remained other ways of preventing Gaza from being transformed into the world's most heavily-armed terrorist haven.

IDF commanders reported last week that they had completed preparations for a major invasion of Gaza aimed at breaking the back of the Hamas-led terrorist infrastructure.
