US strike on Iran only weeks away?

US forces in the Persian Gulf are ready to launch a major aerial assault on Iran this month, according to Russian intelligence sources.

Speaking to Russian media, the sources suggested that the attack could commence as early as this week.

Iran's capture last month of 15 British sailors, coupled with Tehran's escalating defiance over its nuclear program, could serve as a pretext for such an assault.

Iran insists the British forces were trespassing in Iranian waters, and has indicated it may put them on trial and punish them under Iranian law.

The incident has brought British Prime Minister Tony Blair closer to the American position that ultimately military force may be the only way to deal with the regime of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
