UN chief: Hamas just needs time to come around

Source: Associated Press
April 04, 2007

UN chief Ban Ki-moon on Monday urged the international community to ignore Hamas' firm rejection of Israel, and give the Palestinian Authority yet more time to meet the basic peace requirement of recognizing Israel's right to exist.

Ban met with non-Hamas "Palestinian" leaders earlier in the week to discuss an ongoing embargo on financial aid to the PA.

The sanctions remain in place despite the formation of a unity government including PLO chief Mahmoud Abbas' internationally-accepted Fatah terror group because of Hamas' continued open refusal to accept the Jewish state's presence and renounce the use of terrorist violence.

But newly-installed PA Foreign Minister Ziad Abu Amr assured Ban that Hamas will eventually come around, and that was good enough for the UN chief, who is more than ready to simply ignore official statements coming from the Hamas leadership.

On Saturday, Fawzi Barhoum, a spokesman for the Hamas government, reiterated that the terror group will never accept the existence of Israel.

We stress that we do not and will never recognize the right of Israel to exist on one inch of Palestinian land [sic].
