War commission may bring down Olmert gov't

The Winograd Commission into the conduct of Israel's leadership during last summer's war against Hizb'allah may soon result in the downfall of the Olmert government.
A senior source within the commission told Ynet on Wednesday that one of the conclusions to be presented is that the government should have promptly resigned after failing to properly execute the war and lead the nation to victory.
The source said that Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and other officials will not be attacked personally, but that they will be made to accept ministerial responsibility for their failures.
He noted that in the wake of the 1973 Yom Kippur War, the Agranat Commission made the mistake of bringing down the military leadership, while leaving the political leadership intact.
That won't happen with the Winograd Commission, which will make profound statements.
If the government does fall, and new elections are held, recent opinion polls show that Binyamin Netanyahu's opposition Likud Party will easily win control of the Knesset.
