Israeli-Arab lawmaker tells Hamas to remain true to itself

By Ryan Jones
April 10, 2007

Treacherous Israeli-Arab lawmaker Azmi Bishara on Sunday urged Hamas to not make too many concessions on its violent hatred of Israel.

In an interview with a Jordanian newspaper, Bishara insisted that the willingness of Fatah and the PLO to recognize Israel and at least pay lip service to denouncing terrorism had achieved nothing.

That position, of course, ignores the fact that the PLO's participation in a "peace" process with Israel has won it control over all major Palestinian Arab population centers.

However, Bishara insisted the peace process is going nowhere - a fact he quickly blamed on Israel - and said Hamas should remain true to its virulent charter, which calls for the armed destruction of the Jewish state.

On Monday, an Israeli Arab-language newspaper reported that Bishara intends to resign from Israel's Knesset.

Bishara's Balad Party website later denied the report.

If he does return, right-thinking Israeli lawmakers are likely to turn up the heat in their quest to have Bishara ejected from the Knesset for his frequent visits to enemy states such as Syria.

Since entering the Israeli parliament, Bishara has met on several occasions with the Syrian regime, which remains in a state of war with Israel, as well as Lebanon's Hizb'allah terrorists.
