Peace Process

Olmert, 'moderate' Arabs, welcome Bush call

By Stan Goodenough
July 17, 2007

Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert reacted excitedly to US President George W. Bush's announcement Monday of his intention to convene an international peace conference to push towards the creation of a Palestinian state on ancient Jewish lands.

A spokesman for Olmert said the announcement "adds to the momentum" of bilateral talks already under way with PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas.

Olmert believed the summit could be "an excellent umbrella to support the moderate [sic] Palestinians and to give a real push" towards the establishment of Palestine.

Arab states that have managed to cultivate friendly ties with the US also rubbed their hands in glee.

Afraid of the Palestinian threat to his own kingdom - 70 percent of whose subjects are "Palestinians" - Jordan's King Abd'allah said the conference "will pave the way for achieving a real and tangible progress in the peace process leading to an independent Palestinian state to be established on Palestinian [sic] soil."

Saudi Arabia's King Abd'allah called to encourage Bush, claiming that both the "Palestinians" and the Arabs [they are all just Arabs - Ed] choose a "peace" that will see the Jews lose the cradle of their nationhood.

Syria - an avowed enemy of Israel and of the United States - said it was skeptical of the conference idea which, sneered Damascus dictator Bashar el-Assad, amounted to "just words."
