America in the Middle East

Visiting Democrats reveal expediency of US policies

By Stan Goodenough
August 15, 2007

Eighteen Democratic Congressmen betrayed the weakness of America's approach to solving the Arab-Israeli conflict at a press conference in Jerusalem Tuesday.

The group, led by House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD) - and with 13 of its members first-time congressmen - also exposed the expediency that underlies most US politicians' "alliance" with Israel.

They had just ended a visit with PLO chief/Fatah leader/Palestinian Authority chairman Mahmoud Abbas and his newly appointed PA prime minister, Salam Fayad, when they convened the media at the Jerusalem Citadel Hotel, outside the walls of the Old City.

Israeli officials they had met with earlier included Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, Defense Minister Ehud Barak and Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni.

Addressing the press, with his colleagues arrayed in a semi-circle behind him, Hoyer said the group had come to express its "strong unwavering support for Israel's success, sovereignty and safety."

The words he employed are traditionally used by American leaders, whose official position - though few have the courage to spell it out to Israel's face - is that the Israel they wish these things for is the little strip of land the Jews were restricted to between 1948 and 1967 - less than one third of the original territory promised them for a homeland by the League of Nations.

“Israel is a strong and steadfast ally of ours, as we are of theirs," Hoyer continued, adding that the congressmen had also come to the Middle East "to learn for ourselves what the prospects are for the future and what role the United States can continue to play in bringing peace and stability to the region.”

Virtually all Democrats are unified in their position that this peace will only be attainable if and when the Jews finally, and for all time, relinquishes its claim to and control over the "West Bank" -- the cradle of their nationhood and biblical heartland.

As for the wider region, the Democrats overwhelmingly agree that the United States should pull its troops out of Iraq, a retreat that will leave that land at the "mercy" of Iranian megalomaniac Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

The American role Hoyer refers to in the "Palestinian"-Israeli conflict has consistently been to make the best possible use of manipulation; gushing its appreciation of its "loyal and faithful ally, Israel" while exploiting that "friendship" by pressuring Israel into making "good will gestures" to the Palestinians.

Due to these appeasement policies, untold numbers of Jews have been killed and endangered as Israel repeatedly lowers its guard - releasing terrorists from prison, removing road blocks, allowing "Palestinian" laborers "into" Israel, relinquishing control over border crossings, etc. - in order to please Washington.

Hoyer underscored the bankruptcy of the lawmakers' outlook when he in one breath attacked former PLO leader Yasser Arafat as "the single biggest impediment to progress being made between Israel and the Palestinian people," and in the next went on to support Abbas and Fayad who, he opined, "give hope" for success in the diplomatic process.

The Republicans, including President George W. Bush and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, hold precisely the same position.

Abbas is a veteran terrorist who was one of Arafat's most senior lieutenants and who refuses to condemn or fight the terrorism carried out by the armed wing of his faction - the Al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades. Abbas is also an on-the-record Holocaust denier. And he wears a suit.

By dint of its role as the primary sponsor of the land-for-peace process, the United States more than any other nation or group of nations impacts political developments in the Middle East.
