Associated Press gives imprisoned arch-killer voice

By Stan Goodenough

Journalists, most of whom stand on the Arab side of the "Palestinian"- Israeli conflict, went to work again this weekend to help a popular Arab Jew-killer make his voice heard from within the walls of an Israeli prison.

The Associated Press on Monday gave a platform to Marwan Barghouti - a leader of PLO/PA chief Mahmoud Abbas' Fatah faction who is serving five life sentences for the murder of Israelis and the attempted murder of many more.

An popular terrorist, Barghouti is considered an extremely influential "Palestinian" leader and expectations are high among both Arabs and Israel's western enemies that Israel will have to release him and allow him to return to the political game sooner rather than later.

This weekend’s public relations ploy was kicked off when Barghouti's lawyer gave him a list of questions to answer, then handed his reply to the Associated Press to publish.

The Jerusalem Post ran the AP story under the headline: Barghouti wants Hamas to accept early elections.

According to the report, the convict "harshly criticized Hamas for what he called a 'bloody coup' with its takeover of Gaza ... urging the Islamic group to accept early elections to settle internal Palestinian differences."

AP quoted him as saying "the military coup carried out by Hamas dealt a big blow to the nascent democratic experience.

"We should head toward presidential and parliamentary elections at the same time. This should be done as a way out of the current crisis. Hamas should approve these elections," he continued.

Hamas took control of Gaza last July in a putsch - which some called "staged" - that successfully led to the jump-starting of the moribund land-for-peace process when the Bush administration seized the opportunity to swing behind the "moderate" PLO.

With that process gathering steam once more, a concerted effort is underway to heal the Hamas-PLO "rift" and get all the "Palestinians" on board again.

Barghouti is thought able to play an effective part in bringing about this reconciliation because of his popularity.

No-one can accuse him of being "soft on the Jews."
