US election year and the soul of America

By Stan Goodenough
February 04, 2008

As Americans get set for their election year's "Super Tuesday," with projections firming up as to who will likely become the candidates for the White House, conservative observers are trying to increase awareness of what a Democrat win will mean for the United States.

Heading the race on the Republican side is John McCain, with Mitt Romney the potential runner up.

The Democrats have two strong candidates, senators Hillary Clinton, the wife of former President Bill Clinton, and Barack Obama, a young, charming and persuasive African-American.

Former presidential candidate Gary Bauer told his mailing list Saturday it was increasingly apparent that Clinton would ultimately win the nomination, but that Obama's strong performance would oblige her to accept him as her running mate, i.e. candidate for Vice President.

Should they win the election - and "the Democrat vote has been bigger than the GOP vote in virtually every primary to date" - the outcome will be disastrous for what was once a strong Judeo-Christian United States, Bauer warned.

"If on January 20, 2009 Hillary, Barack and Bill take charge of America, there is a 100% certainty that we will be defeated on every front - amnesty for illegals, pro-abortion justices, same-sex marriage, tax hikes, surrender in the war with the jihadists, socialized medicine, etc."

Bauer, who is president of the American Values non-profit organization with close ties to many evangelical Christian leaders said that to ward off this threat it was absolutely essential that the conservative movement unite behind the final Republican nominee, whether or not they now support his candidacy.

To do otherwise, as some influential individuals who reject MaCain have threatened to do, would be "suicidal" for America.

Meanwhile, in a column published in The Jerusalem Post Monday, leftist editor-in-chief of The New Republic Martin Peretz appealed to Israelis to "trust Obama."

If he becomes president, Peretz said, reassuringly, Obama would support the robbery of Jewish lands in order to create a Palestinian state. Not to worry though, he would not pressure just the Israelis but the Arab side too to abide by its commitments.

And he would deal with "the official Palestinian leadership which is willing to deal, but pressure it to take action on other fronts that will bring the people back from Hamas."
