Besieged Gaza Jews: God saved our baby

By Jerusalem Newswire Editorial Staff

Following a morning of intense “Palestinian” artillery attacks on Gaza’s Jewish communities, one settler family credited God with saving their baby after an Arab mortar shell scored a direct hit on their home.

Speaking from Barzilai Hospital in Ashkelon, Liron Damari said it was a “miracle” her daughter Hillel had not been killed when the playpen in which she was playing was smashed during the mortar barrage on northern Gaza’s Nissanit.

Several mortars were also fired at the southern Gaza settlement of Neve Dekalim, causing extensive damage to a home there.

Later in the morning, Palestinian Arab forces turned their attention to the Negev region, launching a Kassam rocket at the town of Sderot.

‘God protected her for us’

At approximately 9 AM Tuesday morning, the Jewish residents of Nissanit in northern Gaza were targeted by “Palestinian” mortar crews.

One shell landed just meters from a kindergarten, and another slammed into the entrance of the Damari home. A third shell landed in the center of the settlement, causing no damage or injuries.

Liron Damaria told Ynet that at the time of the attack, her daughter Hillel was in her playpen in the family’s living room playing with her husband.

“Then the mortar hit the entrance to the house… There was damage to the walls, and the playpen was smashed,” she recounted.

“Thank God all of us are okay; this was a miracle. God saved our little girl, He protected her for us.”

The Damari family received treatment for shock, but suffered no physical injuries.

Relentless barrage

The attack on Nissanit was only one of several during a morning of intense “Palestinian” artillery attacks on Gaza’s Jews.

At least two shells were also fired at Neve Dekalim, severely damaging a home there.

Palestinian Arab forces also fired an anti-tank missile at an IDF post adjacent to the settlement of Rafiah Yam.

Later in the morning, a Kassam rocket was fired from northern Gaza at the nearby Negev town of Sderot.

By noon, five Israeli Jews had been treated for shock as a result of the attacks.

Lax defense

Following a similar barrage last month, the Jews of southern Gaza demanded the government of Prime Minister Ariel Sharon order the IDF to react more severely to the targeting of their homes and children.

Some settlers have accused Sharon of scaling back military operations meant to defend them in an effort to convince more Jews to accept financial compensation in return for willingly evacuating their Gaza homes.
