Anglican head: England should allow Sharia law

By Stan Goodenough
February 08, 2008

The Archbishop of Canterbury, "spiritual head" of the world's hundreds of millions of Anglicans, said Thursday it was inevitable that England would one day have to allow its Muslims to practice some elements of Sharia law.

Rowan Williams' reportedly unexpected remarks in an interview with the BBC triggered an outcry across overwhelmingly-secular, but historically Christian, Great Britain.

Although Muslims constitute only 2.8 percent of the population of England, Islam is the second largest religion practiced in the country

The dwindling number of British Christians - the Methodist Church only has 300,000 congregants, only about 6 percent of nominally Christian Brits attend church, and some disused churches have been turned into mosques - have grown increasingly concerned about Islam's encroachment on their country.

Respected British Bible teacher David Pawson warned in 2003 that England was on the way to becoming Europe's first Islamic state.

In his book The Challenge of Islam to Christians (Hodder Christian Books, 2003) Pawson predicts a coming time of persecution of the Church in England and maintains that the decline of morality and eroding sense of ultimate truth have left a spiritual vacuum which Islam is better prepared than Christianity to move into.
