Israelis too, to choose new leader

By Stan Goodenough

As the United States presidential election entered its final week, Israelis learned that they would soon be holding new elections themselves.

The course was set towards voting for a new prime minister after Kadima chairman and Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni's acknowledged failure earlier this week to form a governing coalition.

Israel's press reported Tuesday the nation will most likely go to the polls on February 10.

Disgraced Prime Minister Ehud Olmert - who police say could be just days away from being indicted on corruption charges - is expected to remain in office until then.

Public surveys in recent months indicated that the official opposition Likud Party leader and former Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu was likely to win in a national vote.

According to left-wing media Thursday, Livni and Netanyahu are at a tie, but that polls show the Likud is considered more likely to be able to form a government than Kadima.

Israel's Labor Party, which was part of the Kadima-led coalition under Olmert, is forecast to be badly mauled in the elections.

The Israeli electorate is famously fickle, however, and there are numerous factors, including security issues and the outcome of the November 4 US presidential election, that could help determine which way things go here.
