Sharon gov't denies rights inherent in Balfour

Lawyers representing the government of Prime Minister Ariel Sharon have argued that the 1917 Balfour Declaration does not entitle Jews to permanently settle in Judea, Samaria and the Gaza Strip.
Their argument was submitted in a brief to Israel's High Court Monday as part of an ongoing legal battle with the Jewish settlers of southern Gaza over Sharon's Expulsion and Compensation Law, Arutz 7 reported.
In 1920, the League of Nations decided at the San Remo Conference to formalize Britain's mandate over "Palestine" and proffer legal status upon the Balfour Declaration.
The closing statement from San Remo built upon the Balfour Declaration by calling for "close Jewish settlement" in all of what is now sovereign Israel, Judea, Samaria, Gaza and the Kingdom of Jordan.
The Balfour Declaration also later served as the basis for the United Nation's 1947 decision to formally recognize the Jews' right to declare independence in the Land of Israel.
The document makes no distinction between what is today sovereign Israel (the Galilee, Negev, coastal plain, etc) and Judea, Samaria and Gaza (Yesha).
Analysts have noted in the past that if the Jews are not entitled to Yesha, then they are not entitled to any of the land.
