IDF continues to highlight retreat dangers

By Jerusalem Newswire Editorial Staff

Senior IDF officials this week continued to point out the security threats posed by Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's plan to surrender control over the Gaza Strip and northern Samaria to the PLO.

The latest to highlight the looming dangers was Central Command head Maj.-Gen. Yair Naveh, who painted a bleak picture of post-withdrawal northern Samaria for visiting members of the Knesset's Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee.

?After we leave [northern Samaria], terror will increase and there will be Kassam rockets and other terrorist attacks? on nearby Israeli population centers, Naveh told the committee members.

He reported a ?huge increase? in the transfer of terrorist weapons into Samaria via Gaza and Egyptian-controlled Sinai, and recommended the IDF ?remain in the area three months after the evacuation [of Jewish residents] in case of fire from PA-controlled areas.?

Right-wing MK Uri Ariel noted Naveh's take on the situation was only the latest in a long line of security assessments that have ?warned of the disaster that Sharon's uprooting would bring.?

The sudden dismissal of outgoing IDF Chief of Staff Moshe Ya'alon earlier this year was seen as a result of his opposition to Sharon's ?disengagement? from a security standpoint.

Former General Security Services director Avi Dichter was also recently relieved of his command after objecting to the retreat from northern Samaria for reasons similar to those given by Naveh.

Sharon continues to tell Israelis and their foreign supporters that quitting Gaza and northern Samaria will bring increased security to the nation's Jewish citizens.
