Islamic Jihad kills, but still committed to truce

Islamic Jihad gunmen shot dead and Israeli Jew and wounded a second early Monday morning, but leaders of the terror group insisted the cold-blooded murder in no way diminished its commitment to the current PA-brokered ceasefire.

?We are still committed to the calm,? Islamic Jihad spokesman Khadr Adnan told reporters a short time after the group took credit for the killing.

The attack, which claimed the life of 28-year-old Yevgeny Reider, was characteristic of a new pattern whereby ?Palestinian? terrorists continue to murder and attempt to murder Israeli Jews, while the PA trumps the so-called ceasefire and demands Israeli concessions in return for it.

Andre Zeidan, 16, was lightly wounded in the attack, and credited Reider, his mother's boyfriend, with saving his life.

?Yevgeny shielded me with his body to ensure I wouldn't be hurt and then I saw he was injured himself,? Ynetnews quoted Zeidan as saying. ?The car started to slow down, so I pushed the gas pedal with my foot and held the wheel to keep it moving.?

The two managed to reach a nearby army checkpoint, where Reider then collapsed and died as IDF soldiers attempted to save his life.

The Council of Jewish Communities in Judea, Samaria and Gaza (Yesha) released a statement saying the shooting ?symbolized the start of a pullout under fire,? referring to Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's plan to withdraw from northern Samaria and Gaza.

Sharon had repeatedly vowed not to retreat from those areas if ?Palestinian? terror continued. It would not be the first promise he broke vis-a-vis his ?disengagement? plan.

Yesha council head Benzi Lieberman said, Today's attack is part of a continuous wave of terror created by the weakness portrayed by the government of Israel. The planned disengagement will bring the terror closer to Netanya, Hadera, and Afula,? all of which border northern Samaria.

Washington responded by saying it was time for PLO chief Mahmoud Abbas to stop talking about progressing down the path to peace, and to start implementing his obligation to disarm and dismantle the terrorist infrastructure.

?Now is the time for the PA to act against terrorists,? State Department spokesman Sean McCormack told reporters.

Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom remind Army Radio that he had warned from the start that Abbas's attempts ?to reach understandings with the extremist organizations? rather than combat them ?were doomed to failure.?
