Peace Process

Ending anti-Israel terror vital to peace ? Shalom

By Jerusalem Newswire Editorial Staff
June 28, 2005

Israeli Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom said Monday that the Palestinian Authority's elimination of anti-Israel Islamic terrorism is key to the success of US-led peace efforts in the region.

However, to ?my great regret, the Palestinian Authority has to date not fulfilled its repeated commitments to put an end to terror and to dismantle the terrorist infrastructure,? Shalom told visiting American Jewish leaders.

Israel's demand that PLO chief Mahmoud Abbas finally honor those commitments ?is

vital to the entire peace process,? the foreign minister continued.

Shalom said Israel ?will not revert to the deplorable pattern of shooting attacks in the morning, funerals in the afternoon, and peace talks in fancy hotels in the evening.?

When Prime Minister Ariel Sharon met with the American guests later in the day he echoed his foreign minister.

?Israel wants to move the [peace] process forward, but a necessary condition for this is quiet and the cessation of terrorism,? Sharon said.

While the PA is making every effort to coordinate with Israel over the planned withdrawal from Gaza and northern Samaria, ?we have yet to see any tangible progress in the war on terrorism,? the prime minister added.

Former US House of Representatives Speaker Newt Gingrich wrote in the summer edition of Middle East Quarterly that the basis for Israeli-Arab peace ?should be the destruction of the terrorists,? and that negotiations should cease until the PA was on board for the war on terror.

Gingrich called the US-backed Road Map peace plan a flawed initiative because of its naive reliance ?Palestinian? compliance.
