Is PA leveraging Hamas terror against Israel?

By Jerusalem Newswire Editorial Staff

Despite its pledge to eschew terrorism as a means of obtaining its political goals, evidence suggests the PLO-run Palestinian Authority continues to leverage anti-Jewish violence as a negotiating tool.

Last week, PA Civil Affairs Minister Mohammed Dahlan suddenly and unexpectedly demanded Israel's planned withdrawal from the Gaza Strip include the surrender of a small piece of land north of Gaza's current borders.

Acquiescing to Dahlan's demand would require the removal of the Israeli village of Netiv Ha'asara.

Jerusalem predictably reacted to Dahlan's stipulation with scorn and contempt.

Days later, Netiv Ha'asara found itself at the center of a fresh terrorist artillery barrage that as of Sunday afternoon had yet to subside.

The Jerusalem Post warned in its Sunday editorial that the correlation of the two events could not be written off as a ?mere unfortunate coincidence.?

Rather, it likely marked the ?germination of the next set of demands to fuel further conflict following the projected completion of the disengagement from Gaza,? opined the Post.

The Palestinian Arabs - including PLO leader Mahmoud Abbas and his predecessor, Yasser Arafat ? have long admitted the current peace process is nothing more than the first phase of their plan to ultimately destroy the Jewish state.

Such statements are regularly dismissed by Western government interested in concluding a Middle East peace deal.
