Report: Sharon to uproot Hebron Jews next

By Jerusalem Newswire Editorial Staff
August 22, 2005

Opponents of Prime Minister Ariel Sharon allege he is planning to forcefully remove Hebron?s Jews from their homes in the city?s market district once he has completed the process of ethnically cleansing Gaza and northern Samaria of all the Jews there.

According to Arutz 7 ? the news outlet representing the views of the majority of Israelis living in Judea and Samaria (and, until this past week, in Gaza) ? 15 Jewish families living in central Hebron are to be removed in the coming weeks.

They established their homes in the marketplace two years ago as a Zionist response to the 2001 cold-blooded murder of Jewish baby girl Shalhevet Pass by an Arab sniper.

Hebron's current market district, or casbah, was built on Jewish-owned lands seized by the Arabs who rioted against the city?s Jews in 1929, massacring many and expelling the rest.

That expulsion heralded the first time in over 3,000 years that Jews did not live in Hebron.

Hebron, one of Judaism?s three holiest cities, marks the first place in the biblical Land of Canaan where Abraham purchased land, an event of such significance that an entire chapter in the Bible is devoted exclusively to that transaction.

Abraham, Isaac and Jacob ? the patriarchs of the nation of Israel ? lie buried in Hebron in a tomb known as the Cave of Machpela, a Jewish holy site the Islamic world has tried to usurp.

Today's Jewish community, which returned to Hebron following Israel's miraculous Six Day War victory, accused Sharon of seeking to secure the goal of the 1929 riots: a Jew-free Hebron.

Expressing his disgust at the policies of the Israeli leadership, Hebron community spokesman Noam Arnon said it was ?not surprising that this government is able to implement the goals of the 1929 rioters to expel Jews from Jewish property in the Jewish Quarter where so much Jewish blood was spilled.?
