Peace Process

Where is the reciprocity?

By Ryan Jones
August 24, 2005

First Israel surrendered Jericho and most of the Gaza Strip to its longtime foe, PLO chief Yasser Arafat, in a desperate lunge for peace.

But the Palestinian Arabs failed to live up to their end of the bargain and disarm the anti-Jewish terror gangs among them.

So Israel tried turning over control of the rest of the major Arab population centers in Judea and Samaria.

Still the terrorists remained armed.

Then Israel decided to make a sacrifice of greater emotional value by relinquishing control over Judaism's third holiest city, Hebron.

Terrorists? Still armed.

Now Israel has ethnically cleansed Gaza and northern Samaria of Jews, as demanded by the PLO. And what is the response of Israel's ?peace? partner, Mahmoud Abbas?

According to reports this week, Abbas' regime has reached a deal with Hamas, Islamic Jihad and others to never disarm them. Well, at least not as long as Jews are controlling any scrap of Middle East real estate.

Whether or not the reported deal is genuine matters little. Abbas' Palestinian Authority has made perfectly clear over the past six months it plans to stick to its formula of not reciprocating Israeli peace moves by honoring its own commitments.

The pattern here should be clear to anyone willing to open their eyes.

Perceived weakness by Israel is feeding Muslim aggression and driving the hope shared by most Palestinian Arabs of one day annihilating the Jewish state.

Besides, why should the PA disarm its terrorist brothers when the world continues to insist on further Israeli concessions without demanding it respond in kind?
