Peace Process

Most Israelis see more evacuations coming

A new poll shows most Israeli Jews believe it is only a matter of time before their government tries to uproot more settlements in Judea and Samaria, Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's promises to the contrary notwithstanding.

Conducted as part of the leftist Peace Index Project, the poll revealed 71.5 percent of Israel's Jewish population feels the withdrawals from parts of its biblical homeland will not stop with Gaza and northern Samaria.

Nevertheless, 41.8 percent of those polled said they would not support any further evacuations of Jewish towns, either unilaterally or in the framework of an agreement with the Palestinian Arabs.

Thirty-four percent said they would back the uprooting of more communities, but only as part of a peace settlement with those Arabs.

Sharon's ?disengagement? from Gaza and northern Samaria was carried out in a unilateral manner, and, as senior Likud MK Binyamin Netanyahu said, without Arab reciprocity.

Regarding the disengagement, 67.1 percent of Israelis believe their pullout from Gaza will result in the area descending into chaos and anarchy, and over 68 percent see Gaza-based terror attacks on Israel intensifying.
