'US should back Israeli war on terror'

When Israel finds itself under attack by the forces of Islamic terror, it should be able to expect unconditional support from the United States in its battle to defend its citizens, Zionist Organization of America Director Morton Klein wrote Tuesday.
Klein strongly criticized the Bush Administration for failing to offer such a level of support to its strongest Middle East ally after Hamas rockets pummeled the Negev town of Sderot earlier this week.
On Monday, State Department Spokesman Sean McCormack, responding to escalating tensions following the rocket barrage, said Washington wanted Israel and the Palestinian Authority ?to help maintain an atmosphere of calm, free from violence.?
In particular, McCormack urged Israel to ?consider the effect that its [retaliatory] actions may have? on American efforts to birth an Arab Muslim state on the Jews' ancient homeland.
?How would the US respond if other governments told it to remain calm? following attacks on its citizens and successful military counter-strikes, Klein wondered.
Rather than being criticized as ?counter-productive,? successful Israeli counter-terrorism efforts, like those initiated this week, should be ?welcomed and encouraged? by the nation that sees itself at the forefront of the global war on terror.
?The Bush Administration should be giving Israel more support to which it is entitled as a fellow democracy being attacked by vicious terrorist organizations that appear on the US terrorism list,? Klein stated.
He noted that when American servicemen and civilians are attacked in Iraq, the US certainly does not react by adopting ?self-defeating advice about 'maintaining calm.'?
?Failure to support Israeli counter-terrorism measures is inconsistent with American interests and falls short of the support Israel is entitled to receive from its ally, the United States.?
Klein also took issue with US officials repeatedly stating ?for the umpteenth time that the PA must disarm the terrorist groups,? but then immediately turning around and ?praising the PA for supposedly taking steps,? despite the fact terrorists remain armed and at large and are openly praised by PA officials as ?martyrs? when Israel manages to kill them.
?Either the PA is disarming terrorists or it's not. If not - which is the case ? our officials should state the truth fearlessly.?
