Peace Process

US demands Abbas act against Jihad

By Ryan Jones
November 01, 2005

In the wake of last week's ?suicide? bombing in Hadera, the Palestinian Authority must finally start to honor its commitments to disarm and dismantle ?Palestinian? terror groups, US National Security Advisor Stephen Hadley said Monday.

?We have made it very clear to [PLO chief Mahmoud Abbas], especially in the wake of the vicious attack in Hadera, that he should begin by acting promptly and forcefully against Palestinian Islamic Jihad,? which claimed credit for that bombing, Hadley said at the American Israel Public Affairs Committee's 2005 National Summit in Los Angeles.

But Washington again seemed to misrepresent Abbas' election platform of last year and his underlying intentions vis-a-vis the Jewish state.

?Palestinian President Abbas earned the trust of his people when he was elected on a platform of peace this past January,? Hadley said. ?Now the Palestinian Authority must make good on that promise by fighting terrorism.?

On the campaign trail in December 2004, however, Abbas stated he would never forcibly disarm his terrorist ?brothers.? He has since repeated that position on numerous occasions.

Nor did Abbas condemn terrorism against Israel as immoral aggression when speaking to ?his people,? but rather criticized it as a tactical error at this stage in the ?peace? process.

In fact, Abbas' only demand of the terrorists prior to and since his election has been that they submit to the PA's authority and not act independently; that they recognize the PA sets the agenda for what is good for the ?Palestinians.?

In Washington this policy is now popularly referred to as Abbas' ?one authority, one gun? policy.
