War on Terror

'Time to return to Gaza'

By Ryan Jones

Israel should respond to escalating terrorism against its people by expelling the Palestinian Authority, but short of that, Jerusalem must at least approve a major IDF incursion into northern Gaza and the establishment of a buffer zone there.

Those were the recommendations of Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee Chairman Yuval Steinitz in an interview with Arutz 7 Thursday.

Israel only allowed the creation of the Palestinian Authority under the assumption it was both capable and willing to bring an end to Arab terrorism against Israel's Jews.

That it has failed to do so for more than a decade should evoke a crushing response from Israel: the dissolution of the PA and the exiling of its more unsavory characters back to Tunis, Steinitz said.

In the absence of such a harsh and comprehensive reaction, the senior Likud MK said Israel must reenter the Gaza Strip and establish a security zone to distance its towns and villages from ?Palestinian? rocket and mortar crews.

Simply playing ?ping-pong? with the terrorists every time they fire a rocket is ?playing right into their hands,? he insisted.

Steinitz urged his government to allow the military to evict the residents of the northern Gaza town of Bet Hanoun, from where most rockets are fired, and create a buffer zone there similar to what existed in southern Lebanon for so many years.

And Israel must do this quickly, before the balance of power is further eroded by the introduction of evermore sophisticated weaponry into Gaza.

The Sharon government and its allies in the Bush administration had promised Israel's departure from Gaza would result in increased peace and tranquility for its people.
