Noam Shalit: Why now?

Deterrence should have been restored before abduction, says bereaved father

Noam Shalit, father of abducted IDF Corporal Gilad Shalit, told reporters outside his home Monday that he approves of the Olmert government's refusal to give in to the blackmail efforts of his son's kidnappers, but wonders why such a traumatic event was necessary to spur Israel to restore its severely diminished deterrence against "Palestinian" terrorist aggression.

In the wake of Israel's withdrawal from the Gaza Strip last summer - a move the "Palestinians" saw as a victory for their campaign of violence - anti-Jewish terrorism rose for the first time in years.

Cabinet Minister Meir Sheetrit suggested at the weekend that Israel should utilize the Shalit abduction to restore its level of deterrence, according to The Jerusalem Post.

Speaking to Israel's Channel 10 News, the elder Shalit responded:

"Israel should have done that before the attack, when there was intelligence information on tunnels being dug in the region."

Successive Israeli governments have been accused of failing to take decisive action against "Palestinian" terrorism until enough Jewish blood has been spilled for the sake of ensuring a certain level of international acceptance for military action.
