Israel to UN: Back off

Vows to do 'everything necessary' to save soldiers

Israel Wednesday discretely told the United Nations to back off after the world body's chief, Kofi Annan, unreservedly condemned the use of military force in response to the killing, wounding and abduction of IDF soldiers by Hizb'allah.

Israeli ground forces poured over the border, and artillery and warplanes pounded terrorist positions throughout southern Lebanon after Hizb'allah launched a coordinated assault on northern Israel Wednesday morning that left seven soldiers dead, eight wounded, and two as captives of the Lebanese terrorists.

Speaking from Rome, Annan called for the release of the soldiers and slammed Israel's incursion into Lebanon.

"I condemn without reservations the attack in southern Lebanon, and demand that Israeli troops be released immediately."

Israel's ambassador to the UN, Dan Gillerman, later told reporters that Israel would "react in every way it deems necessary" to obtain the soldiers' release and protect its border and its people.

Gillerman filed an official complaint over the incident, urging the international community to enforce a Security Council resolution demanding Lebanon disarm all militias within its borders and exert control over all its territory.

The complaint noted the Lebanon's failure to prevent forces within its borders from launching unprovoked attacks on neighboring states constitutes and act of war.
