Israel: We are doing Lebanon a service

Beirut seen as unable to deal with Hizb'allah

An Israeli win against Hizb'allah will benefit Lebanon as much as it will Israel, Israel's Ambassador to the UN, Dan Gillerman, told his Lebanese counterpart during an emergency Security Countil meeting Friday.

Said Gillerman before the gathered Council members, as reported by Ynet:

"Deep inside your heart you know that if you could, you would be sitting here next me. If Israel wins the war, Lebanon will benefit."

The emergency session was called for by Lebanon, which urged the Council to issue an immediate condemnation of Israel's actions.

Israel has repeatedly stated that if Lebanon had fulfilled its obligations under US Security Council Resolution 1559, which demands the disarming of Hizb'allah, there would be no crisis today.

The Lebanese regime is seen by many as too weak to actually confront Hizb'allah, which enjoys strong support from Syria and Iran.

Israel is counting on its American allies to veto any Security Council resolutions against it. US Ambassador to the UN John Bolton blocked one such resolution regarding Israel's anti-terror offensive in Gaza earlier this week.
