Settlers brewing one-state solution

In the aftermath of the Lebanon war and amid ongoing problems with post-disengagement Gaza, polls show the vast majority of Israelis oppose any further unilateral withdrawals.

Most even oppose further land concessions as part of a negotiated peace settlement.

Jewish settler leaders know they have gained a respite from Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's "realignment" policies, but fear he will replace the scheme with a new peace process with the PLO and Hamas - which will end with the international community pressing for new unfavorable realities on the ground.

Before that happens, they are determined to use this time granted them and the public's current feelings towards land concessions to present an alternative to the "two-state solution."

The leading plan at this point, formulated by members of the Yesha Council, calls for Israeli sovereignty over all land from the Jordan River to the Mediterranean Sea, while making provisions that will allow the Palestinian Arabs to "live well."
